Early Morning Surprise

I was hoping to spot a variety of birds waking up and feeding at dawn today, but I came across a most unexpected creature — a deer. I would expect to see a deer near my Pennsylvania home, but not so much in Florida.

First light of day paints a pastel scene in a Florida meadow. 

When I first spotted a tan mammal through the morning mist, I quickly set up my tripod and peered through my 600mm lens, expecting to find a rare Florida Panther. No such luck.  I did, however, find a number of interesting birds and enjoyed the quiet of the morning with a few naturalists — no crowds, no loud people. It was very peaceful. Like this image.

Hydrangea Twins

Just outside my back door, I found fraternal twins on my hydrangea bush: a pink and a blue blossom on the same plant. All the rain in the past few weeks are helping the blossoms last. Stay away, hungry deer!

The hydrangea may be my favorite flower, thanks to associations with my daughter’s  June wedding as well as memories of seeing them on Cape Cod.

Summer Meadow

My friend Erika planted 3 1/2 acres of wildflowers several years ago to create a summer meadow. The deer sleep in there at night. “I think the deer think we did this for them,” she commented.  Perhaps the bees do too, as they are busy doing their work by day.
